By this project Russia for the first time approached the planned detection of tremendous historical and cultural values which for hundred years have been buried in obscurity of its territorial and inland waters. Now from the point of view of the discoveries already made it seems quite strange that these objects have never been studied before and no attempts have been made to find them. Even judging by incomplete information of our list of shipwrecks at the bottom of the Gulf of Finland and Ladoga Lake there are more than 10,000 sunk objects. And this quantity at best makes 30 percent of the actual number of the wracks. The unique natural conditions like fresh and cold water, the absence of harmful microorganisms, weak currents and low transparency of the water ensure fabulous integrity of the sunk ships turning them into a lifelong dream of researchers. Our region is possibly the world`s richest in the wrecks. |
Today our aim is the search, exploration, fixation and state registration of the whole complex of the objects reflecting the history of Northern Europe for minimum 1,400 years. But it is possible that in course of the operations and appearance of more and more discoveries our investigations will turn into the largest exposition and research project in the sphere of history which is capable of providing the scientists and society with a huge volume of new information.
Here we would like to speak about the discoveries already made in order to attract the attention to the huge potential of new knowledge.
